When in doubt, speak up and say it. The squeaky mouse gets the cheese. I am a communicator. Some might say a bit too much of one, but the default switch is definitely ON, not OFF. Huh. I'm right in the middle of reading this book for the first time. You're right, the director is a move in the right direction, if only they don't play it like a Harry Potter.
